Cloudflare review 2026: free CDN and security in front of WordPress

Cloudflare is not web hosting: it sits in front of your host as DNS, CDN, SSL and firewall. The Free plan covers that for $0. APO, which caches whole WordPress pages at Cloudflare’s edge, costs $5 a month on Free and is included in Pro ($20 a month billed yearly, about ₹26,893 a year with GST if charged). Its network lists 22 Indian cities. You still need a good host for uncached pages.

APO and paid add-ons: the fine print
Automatic Platform Optimization (APO) is Cloudflare’s WordPress add-on: Cloudflare describes it as WordPress optimisation with CDN and intelligent caching, which means your pages are cached at its edge, not only images and scripts. It is $5 a month on the Free plan and included with Pro, Business and Enterprise. Cloudflare markets it as “up to 300% faster”; treat that as its claim, not our measurement.

Cloudflare’s plan page shows monthly-billing prices for add-ons and says discounts exist for annual commitments.
What is good and what to watch
Good
- Free plan includes CDN, DNS, SSL, DDoS protection and a WAF
- 22 Indian cities in its network, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad
- APO caches full WordPress pages for $5 a month
- Works with any host
- Pro adds lossless image optimisation and APO
Watch out for
- Not hosting: you still need a server
- Your domain’s DNS must move to Cloudflare
- Free plan support is community only
- Business jumps to $200 a month
- Wrong cache rules can cache pages meant to be private
Cloudflare in India: where pages are served from
Cloudflare lists 348 cities worldwide and 22 in India, among them Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad and Kochi. Cached pages and files are served from the nearest of these, which helps most when your host is abroad. Uncached requests (wp-admin, logged-in users, WooCommerce carts and checkouts) still go to your host, so pair Cloudflare with a host in India rather than using it to hide a slow server.

Create a free account and add your site
Sign up on cloudflare.com, add your domain and pick the Free plan. Cloudflare scans your existing DNS records.

Change your nameservers
At your domain registrar, replace the nameservers with the two Cloudflare gives you. Keep your host’s records as they were.

Set SSL to Full (strict)
If your host has a valid SSL certificate, choose Full (strict) so traffic is encrypted all the way to the server.

Add APO in WordPress
Install the official Cloudflare plugin, connect it, and turn on APO ($5 a month on Free, included on Pro). Then test login, cart and checkout.

Who it suits, and who should pick managed hosting
Pick Cloudflare if you
- Run any WordPress site and want free SSL, DNS and DDoS protection
- Have visitors across India or abroad
- Want full-page caching at the edge with APO
- Host abroad and want cached pages served from India
Pick managed hosting instead if you
- Expect Cloudflare to replace your host (it cannot)
- Have a slow origin: fix hosting first
- Run a store where most traffic is logged in
- Do not want to change nameservers

No. Cloudflare sits in front of your host and handles DNS, CDN, SSL and security. Your WordPress files and database still live on your hosting server.
Is the Cloudflare free plan enough for WordPress?
