AWS Lightsail review 2026: WordPress on AWS in India, priced in rupees
Every Linux bundle with GST, the Mumbai transfer rule, the new Free plan credits, and when EC2 or managed hosting is the better buy.

AWS Lightsail is Amazon’s fixed-price server. Linux bundles start at $5 a month; for WordPress the 2 GB bundle at $12 (about ₹1,345 a month with GST) is a sensible floor. It runs in Mumbai, but Mumbai bundles include half the data transfer. New AWS accounts get $100 credit, plus up to $100 more, for 6 months. It is self-managed, so pick managed hosting if you do not want server work.

Free tier and credits: the fine print
AWS changed its free tier. A new account gets $100 credit at sign-up and can earn up to $100 more by trying services, so up to $200 over 6 months on the Free plan. AWS says the Free plan account closes after 6 months or when the credit runs out, whichever comes first, unless you move to a Paid plan. Lightsail is covered: AWS says you can get started with Lightsail for free under the Free Tier.

Both inbound and outbound data count towards the bundle allowance; only outbound data above it is billed.
What is good and what to watch
Good
- Mumbai region at the same bundle price as the US
- Fixed monthly price with storage and transfer bundled
- WordPress blueprint, with Lightsail as the recommended provider
- Up to $200 credit on the new Free plan
- Easy path to the rest of AWS later
Watch out for
- Mumbai bundles include half the transfer
- Self-managed: updates, security and backups are your job
- Snapshots cost $0.05 per GB a month
- Billed in US dollars, plus 18% GST
- Little RAM per rupee next to Indian VPS hosts
India regions: Mumbai for Lightsail, Hyderabad for EC2
AWS has two regions in India: Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2, which you must enable first). Lightsail runs in Mumbai, so pick Asia Pacific (Mumbai) when you create the instance. The catch is transfer: Lightsail plans in Mumbai include half the data transfer listed for US and European regions, and overage costs $0.13 per GB there.
What about EC2? EC2 is AWS’s full-control server. It runs in both Indian regions but bills compute, disk and data transfer separately, so for one WordPress site Lightsail is the simpler, more predictable choice. Move to EC2 when you need autoscaling, private networking or instance types Lightsail does not sell.

Open an AWS account
Sign up on aws.amazon.com. The Free plan gives $100 credit to start. Prices on the Lightsail page are in US dollars.

Create a WordPress instance in Mumbai
In the Lightsail console choose Create instance, the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region, Linux/Unix and the WordPress blueprint. Pick at least the 2 GB bundle.

Attach a static IP and your domain
Create a static IP, attach it to the instance, then point your domain’s A record at it.

Turn on HTTPS and snapshots
Follow AWS’s Lightsail guide to enable HTTPS, then switch on automatic snapshots so you have backups.

Who it suits, and who should pick managed hosting
Pick AWS Lightsail if you
- Are comfortable with SSH and Linux updates
- Already use AWS or plan to (S3, RDS, CloudFront)
- Want a fixed monthly price with an India region
- Want to test WordPress on the Free plan credit
Pick managed hosting instead if you
- Are starting your first site
- Do not want to patch servers or manage backups
- Need business email with your hosting
- Want support staff to fix WordPress problems
